Hire an Automatic Car in France: Drive with Ease

Why Choose an Automatic Car in France

Automatic car rental in France is increasingly popular among international visitors, particularly those from the United States, Canada, and Australia where manual gearboxes are rare. Driving in Paris traffic, on busy French motorways, or through mountain roads is noticeably more relaxed without the need to manage a clutch. An automatic transmission lets you focus on the road, the signs, and the scenery.

France’s road network includes over 12,000 kilometres of motorway, most of which is toll-operated. Automatic vehicles are especially comfortable on these long stretches: set your speed, engage cruise control, and let the car do the work. Our automatic fleet includes economy, saloon, SUV, and premium categories, so you don’t need to compromise on size or comfort to get the gearbox you want.

Automatic cars are available at all our Paris airport counters (CDG and Orly) and at our main city-centre branches. Demand is high, particularly in summer (June–August) and during school holiday periods. We strongly recommend booking your automatic vehicle at least 7–10 days in advance to guarantee availability. Last-minute requests can sometimes be fulfilled, but the choice of model will be limited.

Automatic vs Manual: Which to Choose

  • Automatic: ideal for city driving, motorway cruising, unfamiliar roads
  • Manual: slightly cheaper on average, more fuel-efficient on some models
  • Hybrid automatics: best fuel economy, available in our eco range
  • Electric: fully automatic by nature, zero emissions, city-friendly

If you hold a driving licence issued outside the European Union, check that it covers automatic vehicles — most do, but some national licences specify the gearbox type. UK licences since 1997 allow both automatic and manual. If in doubt, carry an international driving permit alongside your national licence. Our team can advise on licence requirements for your specific country of origin.

Fuel costs are a practical consideration. Automatic petrol cars at the entry level average around 6.5 litres per 100 km on a mixed drive. Diesel automatics offer better range. Hybrid automatics, available in our mid-range category, average under 5 litres per 100 km — a meaningful saving on a long road trip. Ask about our hybrid upgrade when you book; the price difference is often smaller than you might expect.
