Parking Your Rental Car in Paris: The Essentials
Parking in Paris is one of the most common concerns for visitors renting a car. The city is dense, on-street spaces are limited, and fines are issued efficiently. With the right knowledge and tools, however, finding a parking space is manageable. This guide covers on-street parking, underground car parks, free zones, and the apps you need on your phone.
On-street parking in central Paris (arrondissements 1–20) is paid from Monday to Saturday, 09:00–19:00. Rates vary by zone but average €4–6 per hour in the inner arrondissements. The time limit in most central zones is 1–2 hours, making on-street parking unsuitable for a full day’s visit. Pay using the Paris Stat app (available on iOS and Android) by entering your vehicle registration number; payment takes under two minutes and you receive a digital receipt.
Underground garages are the best option for stays of more than two hours. Paris has over 450 public underground car parks operated by Indigo, Vinci Park, and Q-Park. Prices in central garages average €3–4 per hour, with 24-hour rates of €30–40 in the most central locations. Some outer arrondissement garages offer overnight rates of €15–20. Book in advance via Onepark or ParkNow to lock in a lower rate, particularly for weekend stays when city-centre garages fill up quickly.
Where to Find Free Parking in Paris
- La Défense: free on-street parking on Sundays in some side streets
- 13th, 19th, and 20th arrondissements: outer streets often have no meters
- Bois de Boulogne and Bois de Vincennes: free open-air parking on the periphery
- Sunday parking is free in most Paris streets — ideal for a one-day visit
A practical tip: park-and-ride facilities (Parkings Relais) are located near the end-of-line Metro stations around Paris. These are free or very cheap (often under €3 per day), and a Metro ticket takes you into the city in 20–30 minutes. The combination of park-and-ride plus Metro is significantly cheaper than parking in central Paris, and often faster than driving to your destination once inside the ring road.
Parking fines in Paris are €35 for most infringements and €135 for blocking a bus lane or disabled space. If your rental car is fined or towed, the charge falls to the renter, so the rules matter. Yellow lines indicate no stopping at any time. Single dashes mean loading only. Areas marked “Livraisons” are delivery bays, not parking spaces. When in doubt, look for the blue zone signs or check the nearest meter for the applicable rules.
